The World Media Summit (WMS) has invited entries for the first WMS Global Awards for Excellence, instituted to honour “truth, objectivity, excellence” in journalism.

These are “the first comprehensive news and news-related awards at the international level recognising professional excellence across the print, television, radio, and digital-only platforms,” N. Ram, Chairman of Kasturi & Sons Limited and a co-chairman of the WMS presidium said in a release.

Three categories
The four awards announced fall under three categories: contributions to public welfare by exemplary news teams and news professionals in developing countries; media innovation; and new media reporting.

The awards for media innovation and new media reporting are open to newspapers, news agencies, television organisations and news websites, and news professionals working for these organisations around the world, but the two public welfare awards are designed for news teams and individual journalists working in developing countries.

The World Media Forum is supported by the WMS Foundation and the WMS Secretariat, which are based in Beijing.

The forum’s presidium members include publishers and other senior representatives of media organisations including The New York Times, BBC, Associated Press, Thomson Reuters, News Corp., Xinhua News Agency, ITAR-TASS, Kyodo News, Al Jazeera, NBC, Turner Broadcasting System, MIH Group and Kasturi & Sons Limited.

Entries “published, released or broadcast by media organisations” from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2013 can compete for the awards and must be submitted online. Deadline for submission of entries is September 30, 2014.

The entries will be judged by a distinguished panel of judges comprising senior news professionals, experts, and scholars from various countries.

The working language for the awards process is English. Contributions entered for the awards can be in any language but they need to be accompanied by a competent English translation, on the basis of which evaluations will be made.

The winners will be announced in November 2014 and each winner will receive a certificate and a cash prize of $10,000 at an awards ceremony.
