Founded in 1931£¬the ¡°Red China News Agency¡± was the predecessor of Xinhua, which was renamed ¡°Xinhua News Agency¡± in 1937 in Yan¡¯an. With its development in more than 70 years, Xinhua has made its substantial headway.
Xinhua has enlisted more than 13,000 staff members. With 10 editorial departments, 11 administrative departments and 20 subordinate units in its head office in Beijing, Xinhua has 33 domestic bureaus throughout the country, one in every province, autonomous region and municipality (except Taiwan), as well as the two special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao. There are also sub-branches and correspondent stations in other 20 cities beside the domestic bureaus.
In addition, Xinhua runs more than 100 overseas bureaus, with six regional headquarters in Hong Kong, New York, Mexican City, Nairobi, Cairo and Brussels for the Asia-Pacific region, North America, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
Adopting a multi-channel, multi-level and multi-functional news and information releasing system, Xinhua provides round-the-clock news and economic information services in such formats as text, photo, graphics, audio and video, SMS and also internet website for more than 10,000 subscribers in eight languages¨C Chinese, English, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese and Japanese.
Xinhua publishes more than 20 newspapers and magazines, including Xinhua Daily Telegraph, Information for Reference, Economic Information Daily, China Securities Journal, Shanghai Security News, Modern Express£¬Fortnightly Chat, Chinese Journalists, Chinese Annual (Chinese and English) and so on.
Using advanced information and network technologies, Xinhua has set up multimedia database as well as other technological projects. At present, there are more than 20,000,000 text news stories, 1,300,000 news photos and graphics, and 3000 hours audio and video products in the multimedia database. With continually increased contents, the database is becoming the largest multimedia database with several languages in Chinese media industry, and also an advanced multimedia database in the world.
As member of many international press organizations, Xinhua has signed cooperation agreements for news and personnel exchanges and technical cooperation with news agencies and other news media in more than 100 countries and regions.
